• Biographical Note: Pirtle/Pyrtle Family Bible. 43 Quote from Raymond Jackson:

The Pirtle/Pyrtle family records are from a Bible published in 1825. It was given to James Russell Pirtle in 1847 (he was born in 1833). His father, Richard Pirtle was born Oct. 25, 1805 and married Elizabeth Russell on Jan. 6, 1831.

We have copies of some of these Bible pages. One page reads, "Stereotype Edition. The New Testament of our Lord and Savious Jesus Christ, Translated out of the original tongues; and with the former translation diligently compared and revised. Stereotyped by B. and J. Collins, N.York. Lunenburg, Mass. Published by Edmund Cushing - 1825."

Jo Somerville found an article in Reynolds County Missouri1845-1987 at the Ellington, Reynolds County, Mo. Library that listed the following: James Keman Madison Pyrtle's Family History that corresponds with our family Bible's James M. (Russell) Pyrtle. His wife's name is listed as Elizabeth Elliotte Alcorn. "James and Elliotte came to Mo. from Tn. with the Alcorn families in 1855 and settled on Indian Creek near Goodwater, Mo. They helped found the Emmans Baptist Church. After the Civil War, they made their home on the farm along Sinking Creek between Centerville and Ellington, Mo. Here they reared 11 children...."

Our family notes say James R. M. Pirtle is the step-brother of his wife, Elizabeth Elliotte Alcorn. Our record has Elizabeth Elliotte Alcorn as the daughter of James R.M.'s mother's (Elizabeth Russell) first husband (Robert Alcorn) and his first wife, Lucinda ???. Therefore, Elizabeth Elliotte Alcorn is the step-daughter of James R. M.'s mother, but not his step-sister, I think.
